If repetition is the highest form of flattery, then is a rebooted movie franchise of an already rebooted movie franchise the godliest form of all? And, if so, should we be impressed that Hollywood still has it in them to make another Spiderman movie? Unlikely.
Modern day cinema is obsessed with re-creating films over and over, with such an emphasis that any remotely active audience member is able to retell the superhero origins of Bruce Wayne, whether they’ve seen any of the numerous Batman adaptations or not.
The amount of time and effort that goes into telling the same stories time after time is becoming absurd. Haven’t we had enough renditions of Sinbad? Do we honestly need more Peter Pan?
While movies with original IPs don’t tend to do as well financially, shouldn’t we (as writers) at least be more tempted to try? Is our need for financial satisfaction greater than our desire to tell new stories? Certainly this can’t remain the case forever.
With any luck, 2017 will be the year that we see reboots fall by the wayside – and become the year of fresh new ideas and unique/diverse character stories.
